Constantly Running a Dehumidifier Could Be a Sign of Problems with Your Home
If your property frequently has high levels of moisture in the air, you could be facing problems to your home and your health. High humidity in your home can lead to an increase in molds which can potentially do harm to your health. A small appliances called a dehumidifier (or luftbefeuchter in Germany) can help to reduce the levels of humidity within the air.
However, if you are constantly needing to run a dehumidifier, you may need to get your home checked for structural issues. Alternatively, if you are searching for a new home to buy, finding any existing mold problems is important before you take the keys.
When house hunting, you should consider any smells you find within the house. Certain smells are a good indication that there is a mold problem in the house. Even if you just smell bleach, this could be a sign that the owners are trying to remove the mold.
Most molds will create a musty smell in the house, particularly in and around bathrooms and basements.
A university in America is currently building a new system which would allow you to monitor the air quality in a specified area of your town. Although you could only get a report for the outside air quality, you could get some sort of idea of what it’s like inside the houses. Generally if the air quality is poor and full of moisture outside, this can often spread into the homes in the area.
Unfortunately, this system is still be tested and it would involve sensors being places in the local area. Alternatively, if you are house hunting you could use a thermo-hygrometer to monitor the current air quality.
If you do currently have mold problems within your home, a dehumidifier is one way to control it. However, if you neglect the problem, it could get worse and potentially cause damage to your home. Getting workers in to fix problems with molds can be an expensive job and if it’s left, the mold can cause problems to your health.
It’s odd though, as I was researching into this post, the foreign equivalent kept appearing. It’s slightly odd how the Mexican translation of dehumidifiers humidificadores, and the same word in French, humidificateurs, can be very similar, however, the German translation, luftbefeuchter, is totally different.
